〈 CHARACTER INFO 〉

CHARACTER NAME: Nico di Angelo
CHARACTER AGE: 16
SERIES: Percy Jackson
CHRONOLOGY: Post Trials of Apollo
CLASS: Hero
HOUSING: Open
BACKGROUND: immigrants, we get the job done.

PERSONALITY: When we first see Nico in The Titan’s Curse, he is very much an average ten year old—one with a love of pirates and of a game called Mythomagic. He’s curious and questioning to the point of annoying Percy Jackson. The idea of being a demigod is initially exciting to him, although this quickly dampens as his sister leaves him for the Hunters of Artemis and his status as the son of Hades leaves him feeling unwanted and alone at Camp. His emotions are set into further turmoil after his sister Bianca dies on a quest, leaving him without the only family he’s ever really known.

By The Battle of the Labyrinth, Nico has become a grim and solitary child—a mood he will carry with him for most of the series. Part of this change is likely due to the loss of his sister, but there is also the fact he was manipulated by Minos. He believe that he will never be accepted among his peers at camp, much as his father was never truly accepted on Olympus. Minos takes advantage of these feelings. This shows how Nico is still vulnerable, naïve and gullible. Minos was able to convince him that he was truly helping Nico bring Bianca back, while in turn using his abilities to his own ends. Bianca, and her death are a continual point of weakness for Nico—it is something in his past he desperately wishes to change, even though he can’t. Despite his naivete, and times of being gullible, Nico is fiercely loyal to the Olympians. With Minos’ guidance he could have easily joined Kronos and the Titans, but he chooses to fight against him instead. Ultimately, it is him convincing his father to join the fight in Manhattan that helps turn the tide in the showdown against Kronos’ forces.

While Nico tries hard to seem indifferent, he is continually masking incredible internal pain. Most of this stems from his feeling of “not belonging”—to Camp Half-Blood, to Camp Jupiter, and to the twenty-first century in its entirety. Due to being placed out of time thanks to his visit to the Lotus Casino and being a child of Hades, he continually feels out of place. What he feels to be most damning of all, however, is his sexuality. He fears letting anyone in close enough to know that he’s gay, most likely from his experience growing up in the 1940s. He is so conflicted that, during his time in Tartarus, Nico meets the goddess of misery Akhlys, who claimed there was little more she could do to him as his sorrow and pain were already so exquisite. This can manifest in dangerous ways with his powers—and one point the pain and anger he unleashes on an enemy is so intense that the temperature around him drops to freezing, all of the zombie enemies are decimated, and the leader Bryce is reduced to a mindless ghost.

In Blood of Olympus, Nico is beginning to see how much he is missing by shutting people out—and how misguided some of his fears are. Most of this is from the support and acceptance of Jason and Reyna, both of whom learn the secret of Nico’s sexuality through dire terms—Jason through Cupid’s forced confessions and Reyna through feedback from lending Nico strength. Being accepted for who he was likely gave him the push to confess his feelings Percy, even though he admits to being over them. He is also pushed to realize that people want him around by a very obstinate Will Solace (”Please, you have friends…or people that want to be your friend.”) during the battle against Gaea.

By the events in The Hidden Oracle, Nico is much more sociable and open about himself and his feelings towards others—to the point of being cute enough with his boyfriend in public that it makes Apollo heartsick. This type of openness was hinted at previously as well with his interactions with his half-sister Hazel Levesque. He tries to help her as much as he can in her trials during House of Hades, even going so far as to show her some minor physical affection. While it took longer for him to open up to others, it is obvious that he values family enough to try and be open with her from the get-go. Ultimately, as Nico allows himself to get closer to people he finds himself in a happier and much more accepting place, even if his doubts and uncertainties can sometimes come into play.

For the past two years, Nico has been living the life of a relatively normal teen in Mask—at least he had been up until he was ported out. His time spent there forced him to approach situations a bit differently than at home. This has caused him to grow quite a bit, to the point where he actually makes periodic attempts at reaching out to others to form new bonds rather than waiting for them to do so first. He's more open to affection (sort of) and actually was enjoying the lack of his version of garden variety monsters and meddling gods. Honestly, the lack of pressures from his world has let Nico have the chance to do the one thing he never really got to do back home, and that’s to be a kid.

It’s amazing the wonders having a chance at childhood/adolescence can do for a person, truly.

In his time spent here, Nico has had the opportunity to form relationships that have helped him work through issues he’s worn like a dysfunctional security blanket.Time with different iterations of Persephone helped him settle with lingering feelings connected to his family and those issues. Meeting Sabriel let him commiserate with another person that understood death as more than a terrifying void. The result has been that Nico has been able to be more open and honest about his feelings concerning almost anything, and as such has truly started to step away from his anger and resentment of the world—something he had just started to work towards back home.

Being out of time has always given Nico a unique perspective on matters, but here it was able to shine in ways it can’t back in his universe. He is able to share that perspective as an expert in some things (death, Greek mythos, etc), and as a curious observer in others (what exactly is a “meme” anyway?). Prior to the events in his timeline that made him so jaded, Nico had been a curious and excitable kid—and if this growth of his has him being just a slightly more muted version of the person he could have been, he’s all the better for it.

POWER:

Demigod: As a demigod he is hardwired to read ancient Greek and has innate fighting abilities. These include having faster reflexes than a normal human, as well as an easier time analyzing an enemy on the attack. He's a surprisingly skilled swordsman, and has a higher tolerance for pain than most around him. He's constantly pushing himself through his injuries and beyond to protect what he believes is right. He has survived the terrifying depths of Tartarus without going mad (which might be attributed to being a child of Hades) and his endurance for physical and mental pain as earned him respect from those around him.

Child of Hades:

  • Necromancy

    • Power Over the Undead:Nico is able to raise and control the undead. He is capable of summoning armies of the undead to his aid, however summoning too many wears him out as he uses too much energy. When angered enough (or eventually with enough focus) he can even destroy the summoned dead not under his control. He can also release the souls of those who have cheated death (see Daedalus). In his anger during Blood of Olympus he was also capable of ripping the life out of someone, turning them into a shade and banishing them to the Underworld. As there is no Underworld, this would be limited to summoning the dead, native or otherwise. If pushed to extreme circumstances he could then use his abilities to rip the life out of an individual (obviously with a permissions post).

Osteokinesis: the ability to summon, manipulate, and control bones. This ability is best used when remains in an area are sensed as being incomplete or insubstantial towards the summoning of an undead warrior or animal. The bones can be used as projectiles or to construct temporary constraints or obstacles to enemies. This ability would be limited to being in close proximity to a cemetery in regards to large scale use. Otherwise he can raise small pets buried in yards (and the occasional murder victim much to his dismay) without too much difficulty. It would only last roughly 1.5-4 hours depending on the size of the animal or if using human bones.
    • Umbrakinesis is the ability of a user to manipulate the absence of light. While this has many uses, it mostly manifests with Nico through the use of Shadow Travel. With this ability Nico is able to slip into a shadow and usually uses it to travel anywhere he wishes. In Mask, he will have distance limitations where he cannot cross state lines (he will have to use the Porter system like everyone else) and will likely only be able to cross county lines ~60 miles. If he tries to push farther (IE ~500 miles) the negative health effects he encounters will be more immediate and would require rest. He is able to take people with him--at one point traveling with upwards towards seven others--but the effort takes a lot out of him, often requiring nearly a full days rest afterward. Continual use without proper rest can cause Nico to begin to fade--if he does not take time to rest properly he could eventually fade into the shadows themselves and cease to exist.

    • Death Aura is a presence of death, usually used for intimidation. The most likely effect being induced fear. Nico's aura is particularly intense. In The Last Olympian, it was strong enough that Kronos' monsters initially backed away from Nico in fear. This is an ability Nico cannot fully control, however, as he is shown to radiate this aura when he is extremely nervous, as seen when intimidated by Cupid regarding his sexuality. The grass around him turned brown, wilting as if "poison were seeping from the soles of his shoes.

He is also able to sense the thread of life in someone--he can tell when there is a possibility of death around them. The greater the chance the more likely it is to happen or the more gruesome it will be. Additionally, he is able to sense newly dead and those buried nearby.

Stygian Iron: A three-foot-long black sword he carries with him everywhere. It is also an aid to help Nico channel his ability to summon and control the dead.

    COMMUNITY POST (VOICE) SAMPLE:

[ It's been a while since Hades was in full view on video. The old concert hall is looking less like a concert hall, and more like a refuge center. Nico's been doing a lot since Magnus left and Persephone had left the place to him. ]

    Okay, is this thing on?

[ He looks at the camera, dark circles under his eyes more noticeable than normal. ]

Great. So I'm looking for volunteers. We've... I've made sure Hades continues to be a homeless youth shelter and-- [ There's a pause. ] I don't really know what I'm doing or how else to get the word out. We have money to keep the lights on and the place running but I'm not sure what sort of resources I need to get them help.

[ Them being the few kids who are already here but not featured on the video. Mostly native kids right now, but it's clear that someone lives there from the beds and personal belongings behind Nico. ]

    Any advice?

LOGS POST (PROSE) SAMPLE: Not everyone is Theseus...

FINAL NOTES: Nico's age reflects his time in Mask not his canon point.
